1884 Born 26th June in Großenwiehe near Flensburg.
1904 Abitur, studies in Leipzig, Kiel, Copenhague and Posen: Protestant Theology, English Philology, History, Hebrew, Philosophy and National Economy.
1908 Dissertation in Jena with the philosopher and Nobel prize winner R. Eucken with the disseration thesis: Der Entwicklungsgedanke in der Philosophie Wundts (i.e. The idea of development in Wundt's Philosophy).
1909 Teacher's state examination for secondary education, assistant teacher in Leipzig, school master at the Johanneum in Hamburg.
1912 Member of the executive committee of the Deutscher Bund für Schulreform, since visiting the Landerziehungsheim Schondorf at the lake Ammer consequent reform-pedagogical orientation and work.
1920 Habilitation at the University of Hamburg: Geschichte der Aristotelischen Philosophie im protestantischen Deutschland (i.e. History of Aristotelean Philosophy in Protestant Germany), teacher and head of the Lichtwarkschule, a reform-pedagogical high school in Hamburg.
1923 Call for Professorship in Education at the University of Jena (successor of the Herbartian W. Rein).
1924 Conversion of the university pilot school into a child Lebensraum.
1927 Congress of the Weltbund für Erneuerung der Erziehung in Locarno, there Petersen's pilot scheme is named Jenaplan.
1928 Study and lecture tour through America.
1929 In Chile as adviser for secondary education of the ministry of public education and as professor at the University of Santiago
1937 Honorary doctorate of the University of Athens.
1945 Dean of the social-pedagogical faculty of the University of Jena.
1948 Release from position of dean.
1950 Closing of the University School by the SED.
1951 Peter Petersen dies in Jena and is buried in Großenwiehe.
